DISEC
Welcome to DISEC! The focus of this committee will be on the Yemen civil war. This war has
created a haven for extremist groups like AQAP and ISIS, with counterterrorism efforts,
including drone strikes and local partnerships, hindered by fragmented control across the
country, where Iran-backed Houthi rebels hold key areas like Sanaa. Regional powers such as
Saudi Arabia and the UAE support local militias and Yemeni government forces against both
Houthi influence and extremist factions. However, achieving regional stability requires more than military intervention; it demands addressing root causes of radicalization, such as economic hardship and political instability, through coordinated international initiatives. Delegates will work collectively to solve these issues in a realistic and comprehensive manner.

Topic A: Counterterrorism Efforts and Regional Stabilization in Yemen
The Yemen civil war has created a haven for extremist groups like AQAP and ISIS.
Counterterrorism efforts, including drone strikes and local partnerships, have been complicated by the fragmented control of the country, with the Iran-backed Houthi rebels holding significant territory, including the capital, Sanaa. Regional powers like Saudi Arabia and the UAE support local militias and the Yemeni government forces to counter both Houthi influence and extremist groups. However, effective regional stabilization requires more than military action; it involves addressing the root causes of radicalization, such as economic hardship and political instability, through coordinated international efforts. We will discuss how international actors can develop a comprehensive strategy to bring long-term stability to Yemen and the broader region.
Topic B: Humanitarian Crisis and Trade Disruption in Yemen
The war in Yemen has triggered one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with millions
facing food insecurity and inadequate healthcare. Blockades and damaged infrastructure have restricted the flow of essential goods, particularly through the vital port of Hodeidah, which remains under Houthi control. The conflict has also disrupted trade, impacting both Yemen’s economy and international shipping routes in the Red Sea. Addressing the crisis demands a ceasefire, coordinated relief efforts, and the lifting of blockades to ensure aid can reach those in need. We will explore the necessary steps to alleviate the humanitarian crisis, restore trade, and promote long-term economic recovery in Yemen.
